What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a fat-freezing procedure that employs Cryolipolysis, a method that carefully controls cooling to decrease fat. It is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to target stubborn fat that is eventually eliminated through your body’s metabolic processes.

CoolSculpting is the non-invasive solution when you can’t get rid of that extra fat despite your best efforts with diet and exercise. The procedure is quick with no downtime so you can return to work or regular routine immediately after your visit to Sperling Dermatology. There is no harm to your skin or other tissue since the procedure acts strictly on the fat cells. And the results are proven, noticeable, and lasting—so you’ll look great from every angle.

CoolSculpting: How it Works

CoolSculpting safely delivers controlled cooling in a precise way to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath your skin. The treated fat cells are frozen and gradually die. Over time, your body naturally processes these dead fat cells through your body’s natural elimination process.

The end results are long-term and leave you with a more sculpted body. Dr. Shari Sperling cares about her patients and takes the time to discuss what may be the best approach for helping you achieve your goals of reshaping your body. Together, you and Dr. Sperling will look at your whole body from different angles—and focus on specific areas where you want to get rid of fat. Your treatment plan will be customized specifically for your body. Being a non-surgical procedure means you can return to work or your normal activities after a CoolSculpting treatment.

How much does CoolSculpting cost?

CoolSculpting is a remarkable non-surgical alternative and will likely be less expensive than other invasive methods when it comes to removing unwanted fat. Schedule your free consultation, so we can assess the areas you are considering and give you an accurate estimate of your desired treatment.

Things to know before your CoolSculpting treatment.

Who is an ideal candidate for CoolSculpting?

If you are in good physical health and within 30 pounds of your ideal weight, you are a suitable candidate for CoolSculpting in New Jersey. It is recommended to use diet and exercise as much as possible to get at a stable weight before receiving treatment.

How does CoolSculpting work?

Many people have stubborn fat resistant to exercise and diet. CoolSculpting can minimize the appearance of stubborn bulges by freezing fat cells at four-degree C, sometimes as low as -11 degrees C, to penetrate several layers of fat cells beneath the surface of your skin. Once those fat cells are frozen, they die and go for good.

Does CoolSculpting involve surgery?

There is no surgery involved with CoolSculpting. It is completely non-invasive and done above the surface of your skin in one of our comfortable treatment rooms. You can watch your favorite movie or show on Netflix while we freeze your stubborn fat.

Is CoolSculpting painful?

Most of our patients say they do not experience any pain during a CoolSculpting procedure while some experience moderate discomfort throughout the process. The newer applicators are much more comfortable and are ideal for those sensitive to pain.

How long is a CoolSculpting consultation?

Your free CoolSculpting consultation will take about 15-20 minutes and will include a specific treatment plan and price estimate. You can be treated on the same day as your consultation if you are a good candidate since we have eight CoolSculpting machines (four at each location) to serve you.

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

No damage is done to the skin, organs or any other tissue. Over 10 years of Harvard based studies have shown CoolSculpting as providing safe and effective results. With CoolSculpting, you can have natural-looking results with no lumps and bumps that are typical with liposuction.

What areas of the body can be treated by CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting can treat areas including the abdomen, upper arms, love handles (flanks), bra bulges, inner and outer thighs, banana rolls (under your buttocks) and chin.

Can I really do Coolsculpting during my lunch break?

Because we have multiple CoolSculpting machines at each location, we can treat up to 4 areas at one time (35 minutes)! This helps save you time vs other clinics that may have one machine and can only provide treatment to one area at a time. After your treatment you can drive back to work, workout or travel right away.

Can I get my treatment same day as my consultation?

Yes! We often have same day availability for treatments!

What is a Coolsculpting treatment like from start to finish?

When you decide to treat with Coolsculpting, certain applicators are chosen for the specific area you want treated. For example, a CoolCore for the abdominal area or CoolFit for the arms. Your technician will then apply these applicators in the appropriate treatment area and it will remain there through the duration of the treatment (usually 35-45 minutes).

When these applicators are placed on, a vacuum-like suction pulls and holds the fat in a tissue cup, which then bring the temperature down gradually to -11 degrees C. That is right, your fat will be frozen solid! This stimulates a process called apoptosis which is a programmed cell death. No other cells or organs are harmed, just the subcutaneous fat! When the treatment has completed, your technician will provide a manual massage to further break down the fat cells, by as much as 68%! When the massage is done, your treatment area will return to its normal state – so you won’t be walking out with a block of ice.

FAQs about our CoolSculpting treatment

How many CoolSculpting treatments will I need?

A typical candidate for CoolSculpting will likely need 1-2 treatments in any given area. We offer free consultations to assess the areas you would like to have treated.

Can CoolSculpting help any lumps from liposuction?

CoolSculpting is an ideal treatment to smooth out irregularities from a liposuction or other surgical procedure that leave abnormal fat pockets and make these areas less visible.

How was Coolsculpting discovered?

Harvard scientists learned that children who would hold popsicles in their mouths for prolonged periods would have trace amounts of fat cells killed off from the inside of their cheeks. This lead to the discovery that fat cells are sensitive to cold temperatures.

Is CoolSculpting FDA approved?

CoolSculpting is the only non-invasive treatment cleared by the FDA for the permanent destruction of fat cells.

How long does CoolSculpting take?

Original CoolSculpting applicators take a full hour to treat while the new machines bring the time down to as little as 35 minutes to complete an area of the body. It depends on the location of the treatment with larger areas taking 45 minutes while areas like the outer thighs can take 75 minutes. Sperling Dermatology has eight of the newest CoolSculpting machines to better serve you.

Does Coolsculpting involve incisions or injections?

Simple answer – No. Coolsculpting is a non-invasive technology that destroys fat without cutting the skin, using chemicals or injections of any kind. By simply using cold temperature, we can destroy fat cells for good in several areas on the body as well as the chin.

Can a “beer belly” be treated with Coolsculpting?

Unfortunately no. Because this type of fat is “visceral” which is under the muscular wall surrounding the organs. The type of fat that can be treated with Coolsculpting is called subcutaneous fat and it is located directly below the skin and feels very soft and “jiggly”.

Are there medical restrictions for CoolSculpting?

If you have a hernia mesh, you may not be the best candidate to treat areas of the abdomen with suction applicators including CoolPlus or CoolCore because it may move the mesh. CoolSmooth may be used since it is a non-suctioning applicator. If you take blood thinners, you are advised against a CoolSculpting treatment because it may cause bruising or internal bleeding. Patients who have been diagnosed with Cryoglobulinemia which is a rare medical condition where the blood contains large amounts of cryoglobulins – proteins that become insoluble at reduced temperatures.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

If you take an ice pack out of the freezer and place it on your bare skin, it will give you an idea of the feeling of a CoolSculpting procedure. You may experience a slight burning or tingling sensation for a few minutes, not unlike putting your cold hands in warm water, but that quickly subsides. After each application is done, your technician performs a two-minute manual massage to help break down the frozen fat cells and bring the temperature back to normal, which can feel slightly uncomfortable.

CoolSculpting vs Other Treatments

CoolSculpting vs Liposuction?

Liposuction is an effective method of fat reduction because the fat is physically removed from the body. But being an invasive procedure, it may need use of anesthesia and/or cause scarring or risk of infections. CoolSculpting does not have any of these drawbacks and has had no long-term adverse effects in millions of cases worldwide.

The results of CoolSculpting can be similar to liposuction depending on the patient and their ultimate goals. Studies and before and after photos have shown CoolSculpting usually produces excellent results with one to three treatments making it an excellent non-surgical alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting has no downtime, scars or long-term pain.

How does CoolSculpting compare to Velashape, SculpSure, or Venus Freeze?

Treatments like SculpSure, Velashape and Venus Freeze are “laser treatments” that shrink fat cells temporarily but are not FDA cleared treatments for non-invasive fat reduction. There may be a reduction in the treated areas but no long-term sustainable damage to the fat cells unlike CoolSculpting, which holds the patent for freezing fat cells at -11 degrees C, the temperature at which multiple layers of fat cells crystallize and die.

FAQs about your CoolSculpting recovery.

Is there any downtime after CoolSculpting?

No, there is no downtime after a CoolSculpting procedure. Some of our patients even come during their lunch hour.

What happens if I gain weight or get pregnant after CoolSculpting?

If you gain weight, it might cause your results to appear less visible. A CoolSculpting procedure freezes fat cells which the body then naturally eliminates. Those fat cells are gone, but this does not prevent the body from accumulating new fat. You will have the longest-lasting results from CoolSculpting when used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise.

How long before I see CoolSculpting Results?

Results can be observed as early as four weeks with the best results in two or three months. Some results can take up to six months to fully develop.

What are the side effects of CoolSculpting?

Typically, there are few side effects from CoolSculpting. There may be feelings of temporary tingling, numbness, tenderness, bruising, or swelling in the treated area, which may also become rosy post-treatment for up to an hour.

Are the results from CoolSculpting permanent?

Yes, fat cells do not regenerate after being deleted from your body. You can expect up to 25% in fat reduction each time you treat an area with CoolSculpting, which is safe to do multiple times in one area.

What happens to the skin post Coolsculpting?

The skin is fully protected during the procedure so the most you will leave with is some slight redness to the area. But also, Coolsculpting has been shown to improve the appearance of loose skin. However, everyone reacts differently to this benefit of Coolsculpting, so result can vary.

What happens to the treated fat?

Just like any other dead cell in your body, the destroyed fat cells are processed out naturally through digestion, metabolization and the lymphatic drainage system. You will not be able to see these cells being excreted or feel any differently, just sit back and watch your relationship with your mirror grow stronger!

Can you get lumpy results from CoolSculpting?

When performed by an experienced provider of Spectacular Spa and Sperling Dermatology locations, the CoolSculpting procedure should leave a smooth & “seamless” finished result and correct any irregularities.

What are the risks of CoolSculpting?

Typical risks are a minor chance of temporary bruising, swelling and numbness to the treated area. All side effects are transient and completely resolve with time.

Come visit Dr. Sperling and our team of cosmetic experts and let us help you achieve the spectacular skin you deserve! #StaySpectacular
